Flowers Can Help Decrease Depression in Possible Recession
Study Shows Indulging in Blooms Can Boost Overall Well-Being
With worries about the economy and the winter doldrums looming, everyone will be in need of a proven pick-me-up. Experts predict many may turn to small, simple luxuries to help them cope. According to Kit Yarrow, consumer psychologist and a professor of business and psychology at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, “small indulgences are like life’s exclamation points.” Yarrow also believes, “even in a down economy, when people are getting smaller luxuries, they’re even more important. We need to feel bolstered. We need to feel delighted.”
When looking for a boost, fresh-cut flowers may be the smartest spend. A recent behavioral research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found people have less worry and anxiety and feel less depressed when fresh-cut flowers are present in the home – all great benefits we need during stressful times.
Stan Pohmer, Executive Director of The Flower Promotion Organization suggests making simple flower arrangements to display around the home. Flowerpossibilities.com makes it easy by providing hundreds of do-it-yourself flower recipes including simple, step-by-step instructions and photographs.
